Can airlines advertise in airports where they don’t have flights?

How big is Airport advertising market globally?

Of course, they can! In many markets, multiple airports are servicing any one city. For example (as indicated in a previous answer), London has Heathrow Airport, but also Gatwick and even London City Airport. Many travelers are unaware of the other airports – which could actually be more convenient for the traveler than the airport they are in. So, Virgin could advertise in Heathrow – telling people that Gatwick is more convenient.

In the United States, we have 2 Chicago-area airports (O’Hare and Midway), 2 San Francisco-area airports (San Francisco and Oakland), and there are many, many more. So the airlines can benefit from getting passengers from one of the other airports.

Why would an airport allow an ad that basically encourages people to use a “competitor” airport? Well, many billboards are owned by private marketing firms, not by the airport itself. So, any company could lease the space from the marketing company. If you have the money, your ad goes up!
